SUBWAY® Pro Cycling came close to two stage wins and Paul Odlin moved up to fifth overall after today’s racing at the Powernet Tour of Southland.

Nick Lovegrove was second to Auckland’s Alex Ray (H and J Smith Outdoor World – Avanti Plus) on the mornings 48 kilometre stage three from Riverton to Tuatapere and Odlin repeated the effort coming second to Alex Meenhorst (Kia Motors) on the afternoon 100 kilometre stage four from Tuatapere to Te Anau.

“We did well to get in the three key moves of the day and the team is riding well,” Odlin, who is now only 27 seconds behind tour leader Hayden Roulston, said. “It was our plan to have an impact and we almost got two results.”

Lovegrove was part of a breakaway group on the morning stage that was not caught before the finish, and tried to breakaway for a solo win with nine kilometres left only to be hauled back in. He still had the legs to get up for the sprint to record his best stage finish at the Tour of Southland.

In the afternoon stage Sam Horgan again showed a nose for a break and got away after 30 kilometres with his SUBWAY® Pro Cycling team mate Westley Gough and six others. The main peloton broke up over the Blackmont Hill with eight riders getting away but both breakaway groups were caught with 35 kilometres to go.

Just before Manapouri another break went and Odlin seized the opportunity to hunt out a stage win.

“I felt good, got in a good move and was confident I could finish it off,” Odlin said. “In the sprint I made a mistake and got edged towards the barriers and missed my chance to win.”

Tomorrow’s 179 kilometre stage from Te Anau to the Crown Range, near Queenstown, could be race-defining.

“How it pans out will be influenced by the weather,” Odlin said. “It's a big day that may define the tour outcome. The extra miles will have its affect. A lot of hills and climbing will mean a lot of opportunities to break the field up.”

Pure Black Racing overtook Roulston’s Calder Stewart-Bike NZ in the team standings by 13 seconds with SUBWAY® Pro Cycling lying fourth, one minute and thirty four seconds behind the leaders.
