Playground closed for maintenance - Botanic Gardens

The Christchurch Botanic Gardens is closing its playground and paddling pool for two weeks from Monday, 21 November for urgent repair work and maintenance to be carried out.

This work, which is being carried out by contractor company Calcon, will involve replacement of some of the damaged concrete pathways, removing damaged artificial grass along the edge of the playground and relaying new concrete in its place.

Christchurch City Council City Environment General Manager Jane Parfitt says the repairs are necessary so families of all ages can enjoy the playground in a safe and secure environment in time for the summer season.

“We want families in Christchurch to enjoy the playground free of potential hazards, which is why we are getting the repairs underway now before the summer season starts,” she says.
From Monday, 14 November, Calcon will also begin to rebuild the North Hagley Park tennis courts. This will involve a complete reconstruction of the court surface with new posts, nets and fencing. It is expected that the courts will be completed by Christmas.

Mayor Bob Parker says the repair work will strengthen the quality of the facilities already available in the Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park.

“Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens are internationally recognised as one of the City’s must-see attractions. We need our facilities to match this expectation which is why repairs such as this are so important,” he says.

“Our community also relies on family-friendly and safe facilities such as the Botanic Gardens playground, which is why it is critical that maintenance of these facilities is carried out on a regular basis.”

The repair work to the playground will be subject to weather, so the length of time to complete the repairs may extend into early December.
