Parking spaces designated for people entitled to Mobility Parking Permits are available near public facilities and services throughout Blenheim.

However, a vehicle must display the approved permit to park in one of these spaces. A fine of $150 may be imposed when a space is used without a permit.

The permits are issued on the basis of mobility – not simply to everyone with a disability. A person unable to walk 200 metres without help is entitled to apply; this may include people suffering from an underlying medical condition not immediately obvious to others, such as multiple sclerosis or emphysema.

It is the person, rather than the vehicle, who holds the permit for using the mobility park so anyone conveying a permit holder in their vehicle may use the park so long as a permit is displayed.

The permit must be displayed in the vehicle being used. A handy way for the permit holder to ensure they always have their permit with them if they travel in different vehicles is to attach a small suction cap to the permit for easy display.

Mobility parking spaces are not free parking areas; the maximum time allowed is still only two hours on a metered mobility park. Mobility permits do not enable drivers to stop on yellow lines, no stopping areas, loading zones or clearways.

Applications for a Mobility Parking Permit are available from CCS Action, in Sinclair Street opposite the Railway Station, or Marlborough Roads. A doctor’s certificate is needed to support an application.

Further information is available from Marlborough Roads, Ph: 577 1850, or CCS Disability Action, Ph: 578 1170.

The concessions available under the Mobility Parking Scheme have been granted with the consent of the Marlborough District Council – not by right of law. Co-operation is essential to ensure these concessions are not abused.
