Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei welcomed the announcement of the Labour Party’s policy on children saying that it was good Labour were finally addressing child poverty.

“It’s great to see that Labour will extend Working for Families to the people who need it the most. We have been campaigning on this issue for years and it is good to see Labour are now moving in the right direction to address child poverty,” Mrs Turei said.

“It was a mistake not to extend the In Work Tax Credit to the most vulnerable families when the scheme was first created. Too many children have been living in poverty because of this.

“It’s good to see Labour finally agrees with us that this mistake needs to be fixed, it goes to show how the Greens have been leading on ending child poverty.

“Getting 100,000 children out of poverty is one of the Green Party’s three priorities for the next three years regardless of the Government.

“It is essential that the Greens have a strong voice in Parliament after the election to make sure child poverty gets addressed,” Mrs Turei said.

The four parts of the Green Party’s plan to lift 100,000 children out of poverty are:

  • Make Working for Families work for every low-income family
  • Provide better study support for sole parents and beneficiaries
  • Raise the minimum wage to help working parents
  • Make sure rental properties are warm and healthy for kids
