The Christchurch Civic Awards will this year honour people who undertook acts of kindness, service and heroism during the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011. They will be known as the Christchurch Earthquake Awards this year.

This change has been made to Christchurch’s annual Civic Awards, so the city can recognise the many acts of kindness and courage that followed the earthquakes.

This year’s format will allow for more awards to be presented to the many worthy recipients.

Mayor Bob Parker says the Christchurch Earthquake Awards will be devoted to recognising ‘our earthquake heroes’, honouring as many residents as possible who supported their communities and the city as a whole, following the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes.

“Our city has been through some extraordinary times since September last year. During the earthquakes, communities came together and many people worked selflessly to help others. It is important that we recognise this community and civic service,” he says.

Nominations for the Christchurch Earthquake Awards will open on Thursday 10 November and close on Friday 23 December 2011.

Individuals, associations, organisations and businesses are eligible and nominations are open to residents of all ages. There will, however, be the requirement that the services or acts presented for civic commendation have been performed in direct relation to the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011.

Awards will be presented at a special ceremony in February 2012.
