Thousands of cricket fans across the country have had their say with fast bowler Neil Wagner emerging as the winner of the New Zealand Cricket Fans’ Choice Award in a tightly fought contest.

Less one-hundred votes separated the top four contenders with Wagner beating of notable performances by Tim Southee, Chris Martin, Matt Henry and Ross Taylor.

The Otago Volts left-arm spearhead became the first bowler in the history of First-Class cricket to take five wickets in a six ball over. In a Plunket Shield fixture he reduced Wellington, from 136 for four to 136 for nine in the final over before lunch and finished with career-best figures of six for 36. The final four wickets were all bowled.

Wagner was honoured at The National Bank New Zealand Cricket Awards Dinner with fan Eden Crawford handing over the trophy.

Thousands of registered fans and KIWICAPS voted online and went into the draw to present the prize with 16-year old winner saying: “

“I’m a big fan of Tim Southee’s but did vote for Neil Wagner – five wickets in six balls was outstanding.”

Wagner said he was thrilled to receive the award and was “humbled” by the honour.

“It is a true privilege to be here tonight to receive the award.

“I would like to thank all the fans who voted. It means a lot, especially because of my background being South African.

“Thanks also to everyone at Otago Cricket. Ross (Dykes) and the team have been very supportive.”
