The Green Party have promised a better balance to transport funding in the Wellington region at their transport policy launch today.

"Wellington's support for an efficient public transport system and compact, liveable city is being undermined by a National Government focused almost entirely on funding new roads," said Green Party transport spokesperson Gareth Hughes.

"The Green Party will fund Wellington's transport needs in a more balanced way, prioritising transport solutions that reduce congestion on our roads and make our city easier to get around for everyone, no matter how they choose to travel."

The National Government is currently spending $5 on new roads for every $1 they spend on alternatives. The Green Party are proposing to take a more balanced approach, spending $1 on public transport, walking, and cycling infrastructure for every $1 spent on roads.

"The Key Government's proposed motorway from Levin to the airport won't solve congestion. It will bring more cars into an already congested city undermining the opportunity to deliver better trains and buses," said Mr Hughes.

"We'll shift that $2.4 billion into better alternatives including a modern light rail network for Wellington that will reduce congestion and lower the cost of getting around.

"We will make it safer to walk and cycle by fully funding walking and cycling projects in the Wellington region, so projects like the Great Harbour Way can be completed.

"The Green Party will make sure communities have a real say over transport, rather than just bulldozing ahead with poorly designed roading solutions, like the Basin Reserve flyover or the Kapiti Expressway."

Green Party Co-leader Dr Russel Norman said better bus and train services were good for all road users and essential for strengthening Wellington's economy.

"The Green Party's affordable, costed plan will deliver a 21st century transport network, safer neighbourhoods, and cleaner air while saving everyone money," said Dr Norman.

"The Key Government says it can't afford to future proof our transport network by fast tracking light rail through the city, but they are wrong. We can't afford not to build it.

"Our transport plans cost less than National's and will be more effective at supporting the smart green economic development that Wellingtonians want."
