The extension of the Coastal Walkway to Bell Block has garnered a top award from the country’s leading recreation body.

Last night (Thursday) the New Zealand Recreation Association presented New Plymouth District Council with the Outstanding Project Award. The awards recognise the outstanding contribution that organisations make to the parks and recreation industry.

Mayor Harry Duynhoven says construction of Te Rewa Rewa Bridge and the 3km path to Bell Block has been a magnificent addition to the recreational lifestyle of residents and visitors.

“Of all the developments going on around the country the NZRA has said this is the best one for recreational purposes in the last year. That’s something to be really proud of,” says the Mayor.

“It’s fantastic that this project has now been lauded by both the recreation and the roading sectors, following the Roading Excellence Supreme Award in August.

“This pathway extension is the perfect example of how good planning can make recreation and transport facilities both enjoyable and functional, and encourage more people to get walking, running or cycling to enjoy their local environment.”

On 5 June last year Te Rewa Rewa Bridge opened over the Waiwhakaiho River, and in December the entire length of the Coastal Walkway extension opened for public use. The project was funded by NPDC, the NZ Transport Agency and the Whitaker Family Trust.
