Te Awamutu trainers Graeme and Mark Sanders are setting their sights high with talented sprinter Charma after his latest win at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Co-trainer Graeme Sanders revealed the major target for Charma is the Group 1 Railway Handicap (1200m) at Ellerslie in the New Year.

“We will have to hope that he will have enough weight to make the field for the Railway,” said Sanders.

“He certainly has the class to be worthy of a start in the race,” he said. “The 1200m will be suitable for him although eventually I think 1400m will be his specialist distance.”

Charma won the Radio Live 1100 at Ellerslie in fine style in the hands of Te Awamutu jockey Mark Sweeney.

“He has always shown a ton of ability but has had a few hiccups along the way which have prevented him from showing what he is truly capable of,” Sanders said.

Sanders said Charma is likely to have his next start at Te Rapa on December 10 in a rating 85 1200m event.

“There are not a lot of suitable races for him but the Te Rapa race does look the best option at this stage,” Sanders said.

Charma, a four-year-old by Volksraad, has now won four of his 14 starts to date.
