The number of filled jobs held by wage and salary earners grew over the year to September 2011, Statistics New Zealand said today. The number of seasonally adjusted filled jobs in September 2011 increased by 1.2 percent, compared with September 2010. However, the number of seasonally adjusted filled jobs was relatively flat (down 0.1 percent) compared with August 2011, according to the national employment indicator.

"Filled jobs were flat in September 2011, following a strong rise in August," industry and labour statistics project manager Daniel Griffiths said. “The number of filled jobs rose 1.2 percent over the year and this month is the 17th consecutive month of positive annual job growth."

The national employment indicator is an experimental series that covers filled jobs held by people being paid a wage or salary during the month. It provides an early indication of change in the number of filled jobs at the national level. The focus should be on changes and movements between months, rather than the level of filled jobs.

The indicator complements other labour market statistics produced by Statistics NZ, including the Quarterly Employment Survey and the Household Labour Force Survey.
