Johnsonville Library - What's Your Pick?
From tomorrow (6 December) Wellington City Council will be asking people for feedback on the proposed Johnsonville Library expansion.
During a review of Council community facilities a few years ago, it was found that the local population had outgrown the library. Now the Council wants to know where would people most like the library to be located?
There are four options:
- expand the library where it is on Broderick Road
- place the library next to the swimming pool and community centre on Moorefield Road - with the chance of creating a community 'hub'
- lease space within the redeveloped Johnsonville Mall
- or lease space on the Mobil site on the corner of Moorefield and Johnsonville roads.
The Council's Community Facilities Portfolio Leader, Councillor Justin Lester, says that after analysis of the four sites, the Council believes the integrated hub is the best option.
"But before making a decision, we would like to hear from Johnsonville residents because it's their library and ultimately they know best.
"Johnsonville is an important suburban centre in Wellington, and we would like to get this right."
The preferred option will be put forward in next year's Long Term Plan - where Councillors will decide on what the Council can afford to do over the next 10 years.
"Yes, times are tight," says Cr Lester. "Bur we know that our 46-year-old library is too small for its existing population. We estimate 10,000 more people will move to the Johnsonville area over the next 20 years, and we need a library that can meet their needs."
