One of the responses to the problem of graffiti vandalism in our community is a new art education programme called Art-da-Facts developed by Vibe and Secret Level and supported by Hutt City Council.

The first 14 week programme attracted local teenagers keen to look at urban art in a positive way, in contrast to the negatives of graffiti vandalism.

During a series of workshops aimed at instilling values of respect, ownership and pride, the participants were also encouraged to develop artistic skills and an appreciation for artwork while creating individual and group pieces.

They also explored the history of art, different styles and where their artistic talents can take them with further study and careers.

Last night the students graduated from the programme and showcased their work at a ceremony at The Dowse Art Museum.

It was a proud moment for the students and all those involved in the programme which included businesses and local leaning institutions who pitched in with support. These include Graffiti Modified Designs, the Learning Connexion and WelTec.
