Alison Shanks lived up to expectations today when she won the Senior Womens Road Race at the Lion Foundation Club Road Cycling Nationals in windy and cool conditions.

Competiting in her last road race before she switches her focus to the track, Shanks took the lead in the last lap of the 114Km race and crossed the finish line with a minute between her and 2nd place, Penny Pawson (Counties Manukau).

Today's win gives Shanks double gold after winning the Time Trial on Thursday.

Shanks will be riding for NZ in Invercargill next month at the Oceania Championahips where she is aiming to pick up qualification points for the Beijing Olympics.

Former Oceania Gold Medalist and National Road and Track Champion, Annalisa Farrell, Pegasus, blitzed the field in the Womens 1-2 Masters race. Farrell had the win sewn up from the start of the race, her winning margin so big she was changed and on the finish line supporting her fellow competitiors when the bunch came in 8 minutes later.

Farrell rides as a stoker for the AWD Tandem and her next goal is to qualify and ride at Beijing next year.

Sam Bewley, recently returned from the World Road Championships in Germany will be a rider to look for tomorrow in the Senior Mens race. Jeremey Yates will also be one to watch, Yates, recently returning from a 2 year drug ban, won the Auckland Championships 2 weeks ago on the same course that will be used tomorrow.

The Senior men will begin their 182KM race at 9.30am and also riding tomorrow, the Under 17 Boys will begin at 9:45am.

Spectators are most welcome with all racing beginning on the corner of Blackbridge Road and Linwood Road, Karaka.
