2011 sees more Kiwis flocking to daily deal sites for Christmas gifts
Sales statistics from New Zealand’s largest daily deals site, 1-day.co.nz have revealed that an increasing number of Kiwi shoppers are choosing to take advantage of daily product specials to do their festive shopping.
1-day’s November sales were up by over 30 percent compared with 2010 and have increased by over 500 percent over the past four years.
“Sales have really ramped up in November this year and we have noticed a big increase in website traffic, with both existing and new customers visiting our site daily. This bodes really well for another record December,” says 1-day Group Sales and Marketing Manager, Race Louden.
The most popular gifts are electronics, outdoor, camping and homeware, but many people are also choosing to stock up on food snacks and confectionary for the festive season.
“Research and anecdotal evidence shows that New Zealand households are making a conscious effort to reduce their debt levels at the moment. As a result, they are looking for fun, unique presents that aren't going to cost the earth. On 31 November, for example, we sold out of our $29.99 inflatable sumo suits in just 30 minutes.”
Recent research[1] shows that two-thirds of online New Zealanders receive emails from daily deal websites, and 40 percent have made a purchase from such a site in the past three months. The emergence of daily deal sites in New Zealand is driving the popularity of online shopping with more customers now preferring to do their Christmas shopping online.
"More traditional bricks and mortar stores are moving online, as it is cost-effective and increases customer reach. On top of that, New Zealand shoppers are becoming much more internet savvy, with growth being driven further by the increased use of mobile devices, iPads and smartphones for browsing and purchase."
