The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee will meet on Monday 12 December in Amberley for its monthly public meeting.

At the meeting the committee will receive an update from Meridian Energy on the Amuri Hydro Proposal.

The committee will then discuss recommendations for Immediate Steps biodiversity funding and hear from Environment Canterbury staff how Land Use and Water Quality (LUWQ) will be implemented in the Zone.

The committee will also review its progress over the past 18 months before looking forward to what it needs to do in 2012.

This will be the committee’s last meeting for 2011. Regular monthly meetings will resume on 20 February 2012 in Culverden.

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee was formed in mid-2010 to develop a programme of water management recommendations for the district. Since then the committee has attended countless meetings, engaged with numerous stakeholders and community groups, and listened to presentations from experts.

The culmination of this work was the presentation of the committee’s Zone Implementation Programme (ZIP) to Environment Canterbury and Hurunui District Council in August 2011. The proposed Hurunui Waiau Regional Plan gives effect to many of the recommendations in the ZIP. More than 100 submissions were received on this proposed plan, including a submission on behalf of the zone committee from Environment Canterbury. The hearing on the proposed plan is scheduled for mid 2012.

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone Committee includes seven community members, two Rūnanga representatives, and one each from Hurunui District Council and Environment Canterbury.

The Hurunui-Waiau Zone extends from north of the Ashley River to north of the Conway River and takes in Hanmer Springs, Waiau, Cheviot, Culverden, Hawarden, Waikari
Waipara and Amberley.

Agendas and minutes for each zone committee meeting can be found at Canterbury Water. Committee meetings are open to the public.
