The number of skilled job vacancies advertised online grew across most industry groups in November after showing a fall in the last two months, according to the latest analysis by the Department of Labour.

The latest results from the Department’s Jobs Online index show that skilled job vacancies grew by 3.3% in November, compared to October. Job vacancies overall also grew by 4.2%.

“These results indicate that employers have started looking to increase hiring over the past month,” says the Department’s head of Research and Analysis, Vasantha Krishnan.

“IT vacancies showed the strongest growth in November, followed by healthcare and medical. The only falls were in hospitality and tourism (down 1.7%), and education and training (down 1.7%).”

The highest regional increase was in Wellington where skilled vacancies grew by 10.1% in the last month. The South Island (excluding Canterbury) also had strong growth in skilled job vacancies, with vacancies up by 7.2% in the last month.

Compared to November 2010, skilled job vacancies rose 10.6% and all job vacancies were up by 10.8%. Growth in skilled job vacancies was strongest in construction and engineering (up 14.6% on November 2010), largely due to reconstruction activities in Canterbury.
