CANTERBURY

For the second time this month a pod of Orca have visited Lyttelton Harbour.

Five Orca were spotted by passengers on a Black Cat Cruises Black Diamond ferry as it made its trip across the harbour at 9am this morning. It is the second time in just over two weeks Orca have ventured inside the harbour, which is very rare according to Black Cat Cruises Lyttelton Manager Paul Milligan.

“To see Orca once a year is rare, but twice in two weeks is incredible,” he said. He thought the Orca were possibly feeding on Jelly Fish which he thought had increased in numbers inside the harbour basin.

It was only the third time in six years working for Black Cat Cruises Milligan has seen Orca in Lyttelton Harbour.

“Two weeks ago I had only seen Orca in Lyttelton Harbour once, now it’s been three times which is quite exciting.”
