WELLINGTON CITY

There are just five days to go till the big day where the vast majority of us spend time with family or friends, eating more than our fill. And the same can be said for Council staff - on the whole, we're closing over the long Christmas weekend (Sunday 25 - Wednesday 28 December) and also the long weekend that surrounds New Year celebrations (Sunday 1 - Wednesday 4 January).

Aside from Christmas Day, however, all our swimming pools remain open. Hours vary during this time, so please make sure to check our website before heading out for a swim. There is one exception to this - Tawa Pool is closed at the moment for maintenance.

And if you plan to spend your holiday time reading, make sure to head along to our libraries before closing hours on Christmas Eve - the libraries close over the long Christmas weekend and also from 1 to 4 January.

And you'll be glad to know that this year there'll be no changes to rubbish and recycling collections as Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a weekend. All collections will go on as normal.

Opening hours for our recreation centres, community centres, museums, galleries, zoo, Botanic Garden and Council offices vary. For details, pick up a brochure from your local library, pool or recreation centre, or see:

Holiday Hours 2011/12

But we're not completely shutting down. There'll be skeleton staff in most of our departments processing consents or keeping our services running, and we're working hard to bring you lots of quality entertainment next year at our Summer City festival.

And our Contact Centre remains open at all times, so if you find Santa's got stuck in the chimney, give us a call on (04) 499 4444 - we might be able to help.
