Chief Executive Remuneration Increase

Christchurch City Council has increased the remuneration for its Chief Executive Tony Marryatt to $538,529 a year effective from 1 June 2011.

Mr Marryatt currently receives $474,000 a year, a level set when he last received a remuneration increase in 2009. Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says the increase reflects the increase in the market and also Mr Marryatt’s performance over the past two years.

“The past year in particular has been a very difficult one for our city and Mr Marryatt has led the organisation of 2500 staff during the Civil Defence emergencies and also in the period after the emergency in restoring services to the city,” Mr Parker says.

“This increase aligns Mr Marryatt’s remuneration to the market rate for comparable chief executive roles.

The Council recently reappointed Mr Marryatt and in its opinion the remuneration increase recognises his skills and experience and also his ability to be able to take on the additional responsibility of the vital task of rebuilding Christchurch."

The decision was made by the Council with the majority of seven to five voting for the increase.
