Labour’s Racing spokesperson Ross Robertson is calling on the thoroughbred racing industry to set aside internal differences and work to resolve its pay increase dispute.

A pitch by the Central Districts Jockeys Association for a $30 pay increase per ride was declined by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing earlier this year.

“This week jockeys began industrial action over a break-down in negotiations around a $10 increase on the current rate of $115 per ride,” Ross Robertson said.

Such action by the jockeys should not be taken lightly, he said.

“The industry is coming into a busy time of year. Racing enthusiasts should not have to miss out over Christmas and New Year as a result of this dispute.

“Racing makes a significant contribution to our domestic economy, but faces a number of distinct challenges. The priority for the sector should be maximising its strengths and opportunities, not getting waylaid with pay disputes.

The action will begin with a ban on media interviews for jockeys, then lead on to delaying main races – including those on January 1 – before moving towards a total ban on riding.

“I understand they waived an increase a couple of years ago because they knew that times were tough. But I’m also aware they wouldn’t be taking this action unless they thought it was absolutely necessary.

“I am calling on both parties to consider how best they move negotiations forward and ensure that meetings over the popular Christmas – New Year period are not disrupted,” Ross Robertson said.
