The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board has endorsed the formation of a Joint Steering Team to provide guidance and direction to the community-led master planning process for Sumner Village Centre.

The Joint Steering Team will be made up of team members from: the Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board, representatives of the Sumner Residents’ Association, the Sumner Urban Design Team and the Sumner business community, as well as Christchurch City Council staff.

Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board Chairperson, Bob Todd says this progress marks an important step toward a process to rebuild Sumner’s quake-affected suburban shopping centre.

“This team will provide a channel of communication between the project team and the wider community and will be in a strong position to lend sound advice and expertise to the project,” he says.

Mayor Bob Parker says the recent earthquake events have created a real need for local people to get involved in the recovery and rebuilding of their suburban centres.

“It is very encouraging to see the community leaders, business people and residents coming together for the betterment of their community. I have confidence in the Joint Steering Team’s ability to develop a suitable process for preparing a community-led master plan for Sumner Village Centre,” he says.

The Joint Steering Team will be established by the Community Board early in the New Year and once in place, the master planning process for Sumner Village Centre will get underway.

Timeframes for community workshops for the Sumner Village Centre Master Plan (for the shopping area in Sumner) will be developed in the New Year.

Background information:

In June the Council approved a programme to rebuild quake-affected suburban shopping centres. A programme of work has been approved to support the recovery and rebuild of up to 60 suburban centres through assisting with planning, design and transport initiatives.
The Suburban Centres Programme features two streams of work; one stream involves the development of ‘master plans’ for some of the worst affected shopping centres and the other stream involves the appointment of ‘case managers’ to other affected centres that may require assistance with planning their rebuild.
