Today’s announcement that Wellington’s Miramar South and Strathmore Community schools are to be merged will end months of speculation and uncertainty for both staff and families, Rongotai MP Annette King says.

“The merger has been mooted for almost a year. A decision was initially expected in August and the Ministry of Education had promised it would give at least one term’s notice.

“Thankfully the Minister has seen some sense and given the affected communities a year to come to terms with the change.

“Now that the decision has been made it needs to be supported.

“I am keen to work with the Minister and the Ministry to ensure the new school gets all the resources needed to give its children the best possible facilities and the best possible education,” Annette King said.

“Unfortunately, under the current funding formula, that is unlikely to occur. We need to look at that and we need to work together to come up with a solution that will achieve it.”

“Let’s give the children of south east Wellington the school they deserve,” Annette King said.
