Police are seeking witnesses after two trail bikes failed to stop for police near the Hutt River bank last night.

Lower Hutt Police Tactical Coordinator Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood says at about 6.30pm last night, a Police patrol saw two trail bikes travelling at speed on the area of the river bank just north of the roadworks on Connollly Street.

"The patrol attempted to stop the motorbikes but they sped away along the riverbank heading north. They were then seen again near the Kennedy Good Bridge and again refused to stop. They continued to travel north and were stopped by Police patrols near to the entrance to Stokes Valley."

Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood says, "These motorbike riders were travelling at dangerous speeds in areas where it could be expected that runners, cyclists and families would have been. On a number of occasions Police did not follow them because of the danger that a chase would have posed to the public."

They were subsequently arrested and have been charged with a number of driving related offences and their vehicles have been impounded.

"As we move into the official holiday period it's important that drivers consider the possible outcomes of their actions, in this case there could have been a serious injury caused by the motorbike riders."

Witnesses are asked to contact Senior Sergeant Steve Harwood at Lower Hutt Police on (04) 560 2669 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 with any information.
