Earthquake Information Update

Anyone who is feeling distressed or overwhelmed by the aftershocks and needs extra help to cope with the situation can call the Canterbury Support Line on 0800 777 846 between 8am – 11pm seven days a week.

Toilets

People who have already been issued with chemical toilets in the east of the city, and who are having problems with their wastewater should use their chemical toilets while the sewers are being cleared. If you need more chemicals phone the call centre (941 8999 / 0800 800 169 ) and we will get them delivered to your property.

If you don’t have a chemical toilet but you are having problems with flushing the toilet and waste water phone the call centre and a portable toilet will be delivered to you.

Water Supply

The majority of water main breaks that occurred on Friday, 23 December and Saturday, 24 December, have now been repaired. Water quality continues to be monitored. Repair crews are now responding to new water main breaks and leaks as they are reported. If you are having problems with your water, please phone the Call Centre: 941 8999 / 0800 800 1869 .

Road Conditions

Many roads in the eastern suburbs are still affected by liquefaction material and temporary repairs.

Road Closures

Closed roads – Bower Avenue (Beach Road to Broadhaven Avenue), Atlantis Street, Waygreen Avenue, Wattle Drive (Travis Road to Sandy Avenue), St Davids Street, Gloucester Street (Montreal to Durham streets) and Fitzgerald Avenue restrictions close to Chester Street (east).

Akaroa Museum - opened Monday, 26 December.
Central Art Gallery - all closed including Gallery Shop due to increased threat from Gallery Apartments.

Housing complexes with previous earthquake issues have been visited and engineers are assessing specific units which are considered 'indicator' buildings.

Community Facilities

Hei Hei Community Centre, Waimairi Community Centre, Abberley Park Hall, Harvard Lounge open.

Other

All facilities at the Groynes and Bottle Lake Park are open.
Rapaki Track is closed.
Brighton Pier is open.
Wastewater Treatment Plant open.
Eastern, Styx and Parkhouse Transfer Stations open.
HSBC House in Worcester Street is able to be used.

Water Restrictions

The Council would like to remind residents that Level 3 water restrictions are still in place for Christchurch and Lyttelton Harbour communities. Level 3 means:

- Unattended hoses, sprinklers and garden irrigation systems are not permitted at any time. - No outdoor water use on Mondays.
- Even numbered properties (e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8) - hand-held (e.g. hand-held hoses, watering cans) watering only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Odd numbered properties (e.g. 3, 5, 7, 9) - hand-held (e.g. hand-held hoses, watering cans) watering only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
- Car washing is permitted on your allocated day.

Wastewater and solid waste

The Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant in Bromley is functional.
Wastewater discharges to the lower reaches of the Avon River are now significantly reduced. There are some intermittent discharges in the location of Pages Road at peak flows or as a result of repair work on the network being undertaken.

Power

Any customers without power can contact Orion on 0800 363 9898 . The power supply network in New Brighton and Bexley area remains fragile. Some power supply in the Bexley area is currently being provided by an emergency diesel generator.

Kerbside collection

The Christchurch City Council’s kerbside collection will go ahead as usual with collection days next week, i.e. if your normal collection is Monday or Tuesday then we will be collecting Monday and Tuesday (even though they are holidays).

Buildings

Owners of commercial buildings are urged to engage a Chartered Professional (structural) Engineer to check their buildings before allowing people to occupy them.

Rock fall

Rock fall and cliff collapse were successfully contained by temporary protection measures installed prior to the events of Friday, 23 December. People are reminded to stay away from the Port Hills unless they live there, or need to be there.

Emergency Operation Centre status

The EOC is now closed, however, it will be reinstated in the event of another significant earthquake. The Christchurch City Council Call Centre (941 8999 / 0800 800 169 ) is operational over the public holidays.
