Work begins on repairs to damaged Parklands roads

Work is now underway on temporary repairs to roads in Parklands which sustained significant damage during the December 23 aftershocks.

Council contractors Fulton Hogan have begun repairs on the worst-affected roads in Parklands, with the work expected to take six to eight weeks to complete, says Council CEO Tony Marryatt.

“There have been further pipe breakages in the Parklands area and liquefaction has resulted in some sinkholes which have affected a handful of main roads in the area, including Bower Avenue, Beach Road, Broadhaven Avenue and Queenspark Drive.”

He says Fulton Hogan staff continued to work following the December aftershocks and worked throughout Christmas and New Year to remove silt from private properties which has been left at the kerbside and dampen roads to minimise dust in the eastern areas of the city.

“Initial road inspections have now been completed in the eastern suburbs and a work programme put in place to complete the necessary temporary road repairs.

“From our experience following the June earthquake, we know new sinkholes and potholes can develop quickly following aftershocks, the removal of silt and any rain.

“Residents who are aware of any significant potholes and dangerous road conditions, particularly in quieter streets around Parklands, are asked to contact the Council on phone 941 8999 and report any further damage.”

Meanwhile, trucks have today moved into the residential red zones in Bexley, Avondale and Avonside to begin collecting silt from private properties which has been placed at the kerbside for collection.

He says residents are asked to ensure any remaining stilt from their property is immediately placed at the kerbside.

“These silt collections will be completed by the end of this month, at which stage, residents will be responsible for the removal of any remaining silt that comes from their property.”
