Registrations for term 1 social sport leagues at the ASB Sports Centre are open now and competitions start from 30 January.

Lauren Harkerss used to play outdoor soccer but hasn't looked back since she discovered the indoor version four years ago.

"Futsal is faster and more about skill - the heavier ball means you have to work harder at moving it around, so being quick on your feet is essential. And there're only five of you in the team, including the goalie, so you really get to run around - a lot!"

Futsal is just one of the social sport leagues played weekly at our state-of-the-art sports centre in Kilbirnie. Other sports are korfball (similar to netball and basketball) and floorball, a type of indoor hockey played with lightweight sticks, as well as the more familiar netball, basketball and volleyball.

All offer mixed and men's teams; some sports offer women-only leagues depending on demand.

"Being in a mixed team makes the game that bit more competitive, playing with and against the guys - and it's also fun. I moved up from Christchurch and since I've joined the team, I've really made new friends. We also have a bit of a girls' night once a week, just to kick a ball around," says Lauren.

The leagues cater for various levels of skill and fitness - but whatever your ability it's all about enjoyment. If you don't have a team, sign up as an individual.

You should register directly with the individual sports organisations - for their contact details and more information, phone (04) 801 3400 or visit:
