Cycle Lanes Update
Late last year new cycle lanes were introduced to help improve road safety, especially for active road users – cyclists.
Here are a few rules you need to know:
- Only cyclists can use cycle lanes. It is against the law to drive a motor vehicle along a cycle lane.
- No-one may park in a cycle lane unless signs or markings say you can.
- Motorists can only drive in or across a cycle lane in order to turn at an intersection or driveway, into a parking space, or to manoeuvre around turning traffic.
- Motorists can only drive in or across a cycle lane if the lane is clear of cyclists.
- All cyclists and motorists must indicate clearly their intention to turn or change lanes.
- Open car doors are dangerous for oncoming cyclists. Check before you open our door and don’t leave them open.
