Wellington Walkways

You don't have to go far to enjoy our great city's many walkways and heritage trails - and what better time than summer to get out and explore them.

We maintain a network of walkways that offer a variety of natural features and scenic views of the city, coast and harbour.

There are several inner-city heritage trails that encompass Wellington landmarks and historic sites.

Bolton Street Memorial Park is one of our most popular heritage trails. It is home to Wellington's oldest cemetery, dating from 1840, and offers a tranquil, historically interesting escape just minutes from the city centre.

Many pioneers and notable figures are buried there, including New Zealand Company founder Edward Gibbon Wakefield, New Zealand's longest-serving Prime Minister Richard John Seddon, shoe merchant Robert Hannah, Evening Post founder Henry Blundell and senior chief at Pipitea Pa Te Ropiha Moturoa (of Ngāti Mutunga).

Reserves and Walkways Project Officer David Halliday says Wellington has so many scenic walking tracks for all to enjoy.

"One of the best things about Wellington's many walkways is the feeling of being a long way from city life but without having to leave town,"says David.

"They're a great way to see the city, the harbour and the bush - and they're all close to our cafes, museums and shops. I think Wellington's walkways are still one the city's best kept secrets."
