A highlight on the Christchurch calendar – ASB Classical Sparks returns for another round of music, entertainment and fireworks at North Hagley Park from 6.45pm on Sunday 5 February.

Up to 100,000 people are expected at the free event, which promises to be a musical kaleidoscope of top musicians, singers, dancers and artists, guided by the baton of inspirational conductor Kenneth Young.

Christchurch City Council Marketing Manager Richard Stokes says this year’s spectacle will have a truly international flavour.

“In addition to the extraordinary Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, we have managed to secure top Australian opera singers Jud Arthur and Virgilio Marino – who are sure to belt out some impressive notes.”

The talented Linwood College Orchestra, fresh from their successful tour of Europe and the UK, will open the concert. Russian brother/sister duo Tim and Yulia Mullayanov, six-time New Zealand Amateur Ballroom Champions, will perform throughout.

For a rousing finale, the orchestra will perform Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries, providing the soundtrack to a brilliant fireworks display.

“We suggest people arrive early to ensure a good parking spot and space on the lawn,” says Mr Stokes.

Donations to The Order of St John will be collected during the event to assist with the ambulance and other community services they provide. The rain date is Monday 6 February.
