Christchurch City Council has received 170 nominations for the Christchurch Earthquake Awards.

The Christchurch Earthquake Awards were established late last year to recognise people who undertook acts of kindness, service and heroism during the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011. This was a change to the Christchurch annual Civic Awards.

Mayor Bob Parker says that it was a great response and shows how many people stepped up during extraordinary times to support their community.

“The nominations received are just the tip of the iceberg in recognising those in our community who were someone’s hero during the earthquakes of September 2010 and February 2011.

“While we will honour those who will receive an award at a special service on 22 February, there are many unsung heroes who also deserve this recognition. These awards are about recognising ‘our earthquake heroes’, who are people in our community who put their personal needs aside to assist others.

“The awards will recognise acts of kindness, service and heroism. Given the varied nature of acts being recognised we will be presenting awards to people who did very different things to support their community, but none the less are someone’s earthquake hero.

“We will be presenting the awards at a special ceremony at North Hagley Park on 22 February and I hope that the residents of Christchurch will join me at this service to recognise these special people in our community who went the extra mile at a difficult time.”
