Hamilton City Council has appointed Sean Murray as its new Events and Economic Development General Manager.

Sean, who is presently an Auckland based independent business consultant, will oversee Council’s economic development opportunities and management, events facilities, major events and sponsorship, property portfolio management, commercial activities, and Hamilton Zoo. He starts in the position at the end of the month.

He brings with him a range of commercial and organisational business development experience across both the public and private sectors, both in New Zealand and overseas. Much of his career has been connected with the tourism sector, with his focus in more recent years on commercial business strategy, organisational change and execution initiatives. He also brings experience in the areas of marketing and public sector policy with an economic development focus.

Sean is a past board member of Tourism New Zealand and past chairman of the Tourism Research Council.

Council Chief Executive Barry Harris says: “We are pleased to attract someone of Sean’s calibre and experience to this critical area of Council business. I know he brings with him the experience, skills and business acumen which Council and the city as a whole will benefit from.”

Commenting, Sean Murray says: “I am very excited to be joining the Hamilton City Council team and in particular the opportunity to work in a role that traverses Council’s engagement and support with Hamilton’s business community and the wider Waikato region partnerships.”
