HBMAG Wing Moves Up In The World
Onlookers are now able to get a better view of building work on the Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery’s new wing as construction progresses above ground level.
Completing the last phase of work has been a key milestone in the structure’s construction. The surrounding ground is supported by the building’s external walls and these have been fully sealed to prevent the infiltration of ground water.
The concrete ground floor is to be poured over the coming weeks and ground floor walls formed in masonry blocks. Beams for the first floor are being manufactured off-site.
Work is also moving ahead on the former Holt Gallery with the first floor now completed and new ground floor toilets framed and partially plumbed. Pipework and ducting were recently installed in the basement to provide the climate control needed to ensure optimal storage conditions for artworks and other cultural treasures.
Meanwhile, steps and ramps are being formed as pedestrian access to the former Borough Council Building relocated to Byron Street last year. The concrete steps are being furnished with garden planter boxes and will look very much like the original design.
