Students at The University of Auckland will kick off the academic year in style with a free concert headlined by multiple award-winning New Zealand band, The Naked And Famous.

The band will be the feature act at this year’s 2012 Orientation Concert. Their debut album, “Passive Me, Aggressive You”, debuted on the New Zealand music charts in the number one spot and received national recognition with five awards at the 2011 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards for “Album of the year”, “Single of the year”, “Best group”, “Breakthrough artist of the year” and “Best alternative album”.

“We’re excited to have The Naked And Famous headlining our first event of the year,” says Campus Life Communications and Events Manager Laura Shackel. “They are one of the most promising bands on the New Zealand music scene and are making great progress overseas. It’s fantastic to be able to welcome our students back with such a high calibre band as The Naked And Famous performing on campus.”

The annual concert, now in its third year, is part of a series of activities organised by the university during the first few weeks of the year. This year’s events will include a waka ama/outrigger canoe race across the Waitemata Harbour and a six-mile running event across the university’s City Campus and Albert Park.

“We’ve organised these events not only to help welcome students to the new year but also to showcase what else is available for students at the university, in addition to their academic studies,” says Laura.

“It’s about enjoying all aspects of university life and forging new friendships and memories that will last well after they graduate.”

The 2012 Orientation Concert takes place on Thursday 1 March, from 6pm in the John Hood Plaza at The University of Auckland Business School. Acts include The Naked And Famous, Ruby Frost and The Artisan Guns. It is open to students and staff at the University only.
