Governor-General and Prime Minister to attend commemorative events on 22 February 2012

Christchurch City Council confirmed today that the Governor-General and the Prime Minister will attend commemorative events to mark the first anniversary of the earthquake on Wednesday 22 February 2012 in Christchurch.

Mayor Bob Parker says “I am pleased to announce that the Governor-General Lt Gen Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, Lady Janine Mateparae, The Rt Hon John Key Prime Minister and Mrs Bronagh Key will join us at the ‘Service to mark the 1st anniversary of the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake’ at Latimer Square and the ‘Civic Memorial Service’ at North Hagley Park.

“Their attendance shows that these are commemorative events not only for our community, but also for the people of New Zealand, who will be with us in spirit on the day.”

Mayor Bob Parker confirmed that Prime Minister John Key has requested that the New Zealand flag will fly at half-mast on all Government and public buildings on 22 February 2012.

Mayor Bob Parker says “This is a tremendous sign of respect not only for those lost, but for those left behind who will find the first anniversary a difficult time. This is a day of remembrance for the whole nation.”
