Miriam Margolyes in DICKENS' WOMEN
Tickets for the Christchurch performances of Dickens' Women with Miriam Margolyes, go on sale tomorrow (Fri 10 Feb).
The highly acclaimed production was developed by Miriam Margolyes and Sonia Fraser for the 1989 Edinburgh Festival. It has since travelled internationally, throughout the US, UK, India, Jerusalem, and highly successful tours of Australia and New Zealand in 2007. In 1992 the production was nominated for the prestigious Olivier Award.
Margolyes reveals that the twenty-three characters explored in Dickens’ Women were chosen not only because they are some of the most colourful and entertaining characters for theatre, but also because “they were based on real people in [Dickens’] life; people he fought with and cared for, loved and hated.”
“He’s a surprising man. Much crueller than people expect. So I hope the show will shock the audience and remove them from the comfort zone people likely expect from Dickens.”
Margolyes first encountered Dickens at the age of 11 when she read Oliver Twist, and she hasn’t stopped exploring him since.
Dickens’ Women includes characters from: Martin Chuzzlewit, Sketches by Boz, The Uncommercial Traveller, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Oliver Twist, Domby and Son, David Copperfield, Mrs Lirripers’ Lodgings, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations, Bleak House and Dickens’ Collected Letters.
