Back Beach’s problematic car park will have a hotmix surface laid tomorrow (Friday).

The lower car park will be closed tomorrow to allow the work to take place, and will reopen for use again on Saturday morning.

Mayor Harry Duynhoven says it is clear the car park is very well-used, and the hotmix will get rid of the problem of hot, sticky tar during summer.

“We had some savings from project contracts in the last few months due to a very competitive contractor market, and we have decided to apply those savings to sorting out this perennial tar problem in the car park,” says the Mayor.

“I’m very happy that we’re able to get this fixed for all beach users.”

The size of the car park requires tight turning by vehicles, which damages the chip seal and exacerbates the tar problem.
