WELLINGTON CITY

It's almost the first anniversary of the February earthquake in Christchurch and a good time to check and replenish your emergency supplies.

Wellington Emergency Management Office (WEMO) manager Fred Mecoy says households should have at least three days' supply of food and water stored away, and check freshness and use-by dates.

"Now is also a good time to check torch and radio batteries and go through your emergency checklist and make sure you still have all the items you need."

Ideally, you should also have a portable getaway kit in case you have to leave in a hurry. WEMO has Grab&Go emergency kits available at our Service Centre on Wakefield Street or online for $60.

"The kit includes a dynamo-powered torch and AM/FM radio with siren, a multi-function knife, water purification tablets and a first aid kit, but you will need to add your own items such as shoes, medicines and food," says Fred. "We've kept the cost down because we believe every Wellingtonian should be prepared for emergencies."
