The prohibition notice stopping demolition work at the Hotel Grand Chancellor following an accident at the site last month has now been lifted.

The accident on 20 January, where a worker was seriously injured when he fell from height, is still being investigated by the Department, but demolition work can now continue at the Hotel.

Jean Martin the Department’s Southern General Manager says that the Department’s health and safety investigation into the accident continues and she is pleased with the constructive approach taken by the parties involved.

“This shows that positive, long term safety outcomes can be achieved when the Department and organisations work together with a clear focus on workplace safety.

“In general we have been very pleased with the cooperation and attitude of the companies involved with the earthquake recovery work in the red zone.

“A considerable amount of demolition work has already been safely undertaken and this is considered a testament to the health and safety commitment of companies working in the red zone. Obviously we want this strong safety record to continue.

“However, no one should be injured while at work and our thoughts go out to the injured worker and his family, Ms Martin says.
