Huatoki Walkway Upgrade About to Begin
The upgrade of a section of Huatoki Walkway will begin on Wednesday (22 February).
As part of the Let’s Go programme, the section from Parsons Street to the Vivian Street viaduct will be upgraded to create a very good quality off-road route between Vogeltown and the central city for walkers, runners and cyclists, and those pushing a buggy.
Footpath markings will be painted from the viaduct through Sir Victor Davies Park to the Powderham Street entrance, to better link Huatoki Walkway to the central city.
“This walkway is quite challenging for users in places because of the topography and how slippery it can get in the wet,” says Let’s Go Project Manager Carl Whittleston.
“In this upgrade we’ll be widening the path and making the gradients less steep in some places. The path will be 2.5m wide in most places – we’ll use compacted gravel along the flatter sections but there will be a light chip seal on the steeper sections, for user safety.
“This work will bring most of the Huatoki Walkway up to the standard of Te Henui Walkway.”
The project will be completed in early May (depending on the weather).
Parts of the walkway will be closed to all users from 8am-5pm each day during the upgrade, and these areas will be clearly signed. “Occasionally we might have to close some of the path into the evening, but we’ll keep the diversion signs up so that people will know to stay away,” says Mr Whittleston.
