The Managing Editor of Australia's much acclaimed "A Current Affair" programme, Anthony Flannery, has been appointed as TVNZ's new Head of News and Current Affairs.

TVNZ's Head of Television Jeff Latch said today that the Nine Network's Mr Flannery, 45, would start work at TVNZ in May.

"Anthony comes to TVNZ with a strong background in broadcast journalism. He is a practical, hands-on journalist but also someone with news and current affairs management experience," Mr Latch said.

"Anthony is a highly experienced journalist with a great understanding of producing daily news, daily news shows and current affairs," he said.

"Anthony also understands about producing news for a variety of media platforms, which is critical to the delivery of TVNZ's new five year strategic plan 'Inspiring New Zealanders on every screen'."

Mr Flannery has been Managing Editor of the Nine Network's highly successful "A Current Affair" programme since July 2006. As Managing Editor he has responsibility for editorial selection, programme production, programme administration, the ninemsn website and staff management.

He has been at the Nine Network since 1995 in a number of senior positions, including that of Senior Producer and then Executive Producer of the channel's main 6pm news and Executive Producer of the daily morning news programme TODAY. Previous to that he worked in regional television for the Nine Network at NTD8 Darwin as News Director as well as a stint in the 1980s as Bureau Chief/Reporter for Mid-State Television in Western New South Wales.

Mr Flannery also has a background in political environments, having been News Director and Chief of Staff/Producer/Reporter for WIN TV in Canberra. In the mid-1980s he was Press Secretary to David Simmons MP.

Having grown up in Parkes, New South Wales, and completing a Bachelor of Arts (communications/journalism) degree, he started his career in newspapers in 1984.

Mr Flannery, who has family in New Zealand, said he was looking forward to the move.

"TVNZ and its predecessors have a reputation for outstanding broadcast journalism and I'm looking forward to contributing to this fine tradition. With the major changes going on globally in the way people access their news, information and entertainment I see this as a major challenge for my career."

He said he would be involved in the interviews in a few weeks time for the new roles that reported to the Head of News and Current Affairs.

"I'm aware of the proposed changes to News and Current Affairs that have been designed by staff at TVNZ and I'm fully supportive of the direction they're heading in. In an ideal world news operations would have unlimited budgets but journalists live in the real world. TVNZ will still have around double the news and current affairs staff of its main rival. TVNZ's 6pm news is the most popular news in New Zealand and it's an award winning programme."
