Export sales of goods and services from the New Zealand information and communication technology (ICT) industry increased 19.9 percent, to $1.6 billion for the 2006 financial year, Statistics New Zealand said today. This export value represents 9.1 percent of total ICT sales of $17.6 billion. Almost 91 percent of sales were to the New Zealand domestic market.

The electronic devices and equipment commodity group had the highest export value, up $97 million from 2005 to reach $523 million. This was just under a third of the total ICT export value.

Telecommunication and program distribution services remain the dominant ICT total sales commodity, up $319 million in 2006 and accounting for just under a third ($5.8 billion) of the total $17.6 billion ICT sales. Audio and visual equipment had the largest percentage increase (27.1 percent) between the two years. Sales were up $207 million to just under $1 billion ($970 million).

The ICT industry is estimated to have just over 2,000 businesses with two or more employees.

Of businesses reporting ICT sales for the 2006 financial year, strength of competition was the most frequent barrier to their growth (33 percent of businesses). The ability to attract and/or retain experienced staff, and the ability to attract and/or retain qualified staff, were barriers for 26.7 and 24.3 percent of businesses, respectively.

Data from the ICT Supply Survey: 2005/06 will be included in the OECD Science, Technology and Industry scoreboard (www.oecd.org/sti/scoreboard) which will be updated later in 2007.
