Way forward for Frankton Market
Hamilton City Council has agreed on a way forward which will allow the popular Frankton Market to continue.
Council yesterday voted 6-4 in favour of allowing the market to continue to operate under a Traffic Management Plan that does not require the closure of Commerce Street.
Council, Frankton Business Association, market organisers and major Frankton retailer Forlong’s will work together to establish a Traffic Management Plan based on allowing vehicles to continue using Commerce Street, but also make it safe for market stall-holders and patrons.
The existing on-street car parks will be occupied by stalls which will face retail outlets on Commerce Street. Vehicles will be able to use Commerce Street while the market is held on Saturday morning.
Council has also asked staff to report back on the implications of a shared zone on Commerce Street, where vehicles must give way to pedestrians. The shared zone concept is the basis for work currently being undertaken in the central city, connecting Worley Place to Alexandra Street.
Council staff have been involved in on-going discussions with the major parties to ensure the market can continue long-term.
Acknowledging the contribution of both Forlong’s and the Frankton Market to the city, Mayor Julie Hardaker urged all parties to continue negotiations to refine the arrangements to find an ideal long-term outcome.
“Council will be paying close attention to the staff report on the effectiveness of a shared zone concept,” she said.
