A second sculpture that will enhance the inner-city will be installed early next year.

The sculpture, which will be over five metres high, will be sited close to the Library Quadrant and will add to the impact that the Coleman Mall sculpture has made since it was unveiled last month.

The Palmerston North Public Sculpture Trust, which has commissioned both sculptures, intends to install a further eight works in and around the inner-city over the next 10 years.

The Trust, in partnership with the City Council which has provided part funding for the installations, has identified a number of potential sites sites and is progressively commissioning the works.

“We want to add real value to the public spaces as part of achieving a more vibrant city centre,” says Trust Member, Simon Barnett.

“A second sculpture will compliment the one already installed and we hope to announce its location before the end of the year.”

Simon says the Coleman Mall sculpture, entitled Numbers, has become a talking point with reaction ranging from “congratulations”, “it’s great” to “I don’t understand what it’s meant to be.”

He points out that overseas public sculpture is an established part of city scapes and building developers must put a percentage of construction costs towards the erection of a public sculpture.

“Our intention is to soften and add vitality to the public areas around the Library Quadrant,” Simon comments.
