Horgan lowers time trial record

Sam Horgan (SUBWAY® Pro Cycling) lowered the Canterbury Time Trial Association 16 kilometre record by 11 seconds on Tuesday night.

Horgan’s team mate Paul Odlin lowered the record in January and Horgan said he has had the record in his sights ever since, and was “stoked” to finally get it this week. 

“I have been working hard on my time trialling with next week’s Oceania Champs in Queenstown a major goal for me,” Horgan said.

“I’ve been riding the Tai Tapu event regularly over the last couple of months and steadily improving. The combination of fast conditions and a decrease in my training load the week before Oceania’s was enough to allow me to break Paul’s record. It gives me a lot of confidence for next week in Queenstown.”

Odlin recorded 19 minutes and 40 seconds in January to take two seconds off Michael Vink’s record set in 2010. Racing has only resumed on the Tai Tapu course this summer after the September earthquakes caused damage to the road making riding not possible. 

Next week’s Oceania Time Trial Championships is also a focus for Odlin who won the elite National Time Trial title in January, an event that also saw Horgan finish second.
