The Canterbury Water Lower Waitaki - South Coastal Canterbury Zone Committee is looking to appoint a new community member to its committee following a resignation.

Chair Robin Murphy said the committee - which has recently completed its Zone Implementation Programme - is particularly interested in appointing a person who has an affiliation for, or experience in, the area between Waimate and Pareora.

The zone committee is one of ten set up under the Canterbury Water Management Strategy charged with developing strategies, tactics and activities to give effect to the fundamental principles and targets of the Strategy.

"To preserve the balance of the committee we are looking for candidates with a specific relationship with the northern part of the zone. They should also understand the need to balance the competing demands for water.

"We are particularly looking for a person who has experience engaging with communities, and is competent at dealing with technical and often complex issues.

"We are sure there are many people in the region who share the same passion as us for making a positive difference in water management and wish to put their names forward," he said.

People have until March 30 to submit their expression of interest which can be done via the website at www.ecan.govt.nz/canterburywater .

Candidates will then be assessed on their ability to work collaboratively and their general suitability for the position.

The Lower Waitaki Zone Committee meets on the third Thursday of each month in either Waimate or Oamaru between 3 and 8pm.

Candidates must be able to attend the meetings, live in (or have a significant relationship with) the zone, and have experience with working collaboratively and engaging with communities.

"This is an exciting time for us as a committee, and for the Lower Waitaki community, to be able to have an influence on the future of our precious resource.

"We are looking for people who have a passion for our region and a real interest in working collaboratively to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to join the committee," he said.

How to apply

Expression of Interest forms are downloadable from www.ecan.govt.nz./canterburywater and should be sent to narissa.armstrong@ecan.govt.nz (along with a CV) by March 30, 2012.

Details of the existing committee members and a copy of the Zone Implementation Programme are also available on the Lower Waitaki page of the website.

The Lower Waitaki Zone Committee is a joint committee of the Waimate and Waitaki District Councils and Environment Canterbury.
