The world’s most exclusive cruise ship The World arrives in Akaroa on Wednesday for a stay of three days.

The huge cruise ship offers an exclusive seagoing community for its residents as it constantly travels the world. Those on board purchase apartment’s long term that allows residents to relax and enjoy life onboard that resembles any other upscale community on land. It features golf or tennis lessons, spa treatments, a fitness club, casino, night clubs and even a grocery store, delicatessen and travel agency.

Christchurch and Canterbury locals are being given the chance to get up close and personal to the floating slice of luxury by Black Cat Cruises who are running two one hour cruises to view the ship from the water.

“It’s not often one gets the chance to see something so spectacular,” Black Cat Cruises Marketing Manager Alison Fleming said.

“The World is the largest privately owned yacht on the planet. Each resident owns one or more of the 165 private onboard Residences, so collectively they own the ship. It really is something quite special and different and is far beyond any usual luxury travel standards.”

Residents are involved in creating the ship’s itineraries, and a special, in-depth expeditions and unique Enrichment Program. The Program brings onboard experts in all different fields; diving, wine tasting, world cultures - to prepare for each port they visit.

Fleming said passengers have a few tours already booked, including a Canterbury Countryside tour and then a scenic nature tour to the Pohatu penguin colony.  She said they also have an arts and garden tour booked.

Cruises to view The World depart at 3.40pm on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th March. The ship arrives at around 6pm on Wednesday and leaves on Saturday just before midnight.
