Police in the Wellington District are urging motorists heading away for the Easter weekend to take it easy on the roads this weekend.

Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Pete Baird says after a double fatal near Churton Park last Friday evening, Police want to ensure there are no further tragedies on our roads this Easter.

"We will be highly visible throughout the District over the course of the weekend. Within your driver's tool box you should be thinking about safe speeds, ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is correctly restrained, have patience, share the driving and beware of fatigue."

For the duration of the official holiday period, the speed limit tolerance is 4km for all permanent posted speed limits. This means that Police will take action where vehicle speeds are checked at more than 4km above the posted speed limit.

Inspector Baird says often people consider their holiday begins when they arrive at their destination. In fact, your journey should be factored into your holiday, which starts the moment you leave home.

"There will be delays on Thursday evening and Good Friday as Wellingtonians head north, and we urge all motorists to be patient. Drivers should also expect delays as they head back into the region on Easter Monday too."

"Make sure you share the driving where possible and recognise the signs of fatigue and have some games or books to keep the younger ones entertained so you're not distracted."

Inspector Baird says Police want everyone to make it to their destination in one piece and enjoy a happy Easter.

The official Easter holiday period officially begins at 4pm on Thursday 5 April and finishes at 6am on Tuesday 10 April 2012.
