WHANGAREI

Another bumper weekend of sporting events has reinforced Whangarei as an energetic, friendly place that attracts top calibre events and visitor dollars.

“The Brother International Rally of Whangarei was a huge success as was the Football Ferns’fabulous 8-0 victory against Papua New Guinea in the OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifier final at the Northland Events Centre,” said Council Economic Development Manager Peter Gleeson.

“I have had feedback that motelliers and accommodation providers were really happy with the results, and the crowds had a good time the events.

"There was great interest in the ‘Dash for Cash’ motorbike racing down on Pohe Island, the Town Basin was crowded all weekend, the Craw Family collection of vintage cars and the Artisans Fair were fun-filled events, and we received very positive feedback from the racers and race organiers.

“The international rally teams raved about the speed of the rally roads, well compacted and not too gravelly, enabling safe driving and fast times. They also commented on the enthusiasm and friendliness of the locals, and many said they would be coming back next year.

“We are starting to make real progress cementing this rally’s international reputation as a “boutique event” centred in a unique, intimate setting, surrounded by really distinctive roads and supported by great crowds.

“These drivers are in the rally business for the experience it offers them. They travel all over the world and they report that there really is something special about this rally. Long may it last.”

Mr Gleeson said the warmth and friendliness was also tangible at the Northland Events Centre where more than 2,200 people crowded the stand to cheer the Football Ferns to their 8-0 victory against Papua New Guinea.

“It was a real treat for locals to see Whangarei-raised Abby Erceg and Hannah Wilkinson combine to score the first goal.

“When you have crowds that are as warm and generous as ours, you know events are going to be a success, but it’s never sweeter than when you see your own people doing well.”
