New Zealand First believes there should not be state funding of political organisations in New Zealand, but is supportive of any initiatives to remove corruption and bring greater transparency to our electoral system, says New Zealand First leader Winston Peters.

The New Zealand First caucus is meeting today and tomorrow in Wellington.

“Corruption and a lack of transparency in the system is of major concern, and such action threatens the very heart of our democracy. We do not believe that foreigners should be able to buy political influence as they have in the past, or that secret money should be used to buy an election.

“Disclosure and tightening of the rules in electorate campaigns is absolutely essential as this has been seriously abused.

“It is up to political parties to earn their support from New Zealanders. Corruption and outside influences have no place in our democracy,” said Mr Peters.
