CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker is encouraging people to attend Christchurch’s 2012 ANZAC Dawn Service. The Service will be held at Cranmer Square from 6.30am on 25 April.

ANZAC Day is sacred to the people of New Zealand and presents an opportunity for communities to come together to reflect on the courage of our servicemen and women, past and present, in times of peace and conflict.

“For the people of Christchurch this day will be especially significant. We have all been through a tough year, but our sense of belonging and connection will be strengthened when we gather together on ANZAC Day to honour our fallen and those who have served,” he says.

An additional Citizens’ Service for the people of Christchurch will be held from 10am at Christ’s College Chapel, Rolleston Avenue.

The Dawn Service is organised by the Christchurch City Council in conjunction with the Canterbury Branch of the Malayan Veterans Association and the Christchurch Branch of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association. It will be attended by dignitaries including the Governor-General His Excellency Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae GNZM, QSO, and Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker.

Service format:

  • 6.20am: parade.
  • 6.30am: service begins, centred around the symbolic memorial.
  • 6.55am: volley of shots fired.
  • 7am: over-flight by the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
  • 7.15am: service concludes.

Some roads around Cranmer Square will close from 5.30am to 7.30am, namely:

  • Montreal Street at the Armagh Street intersection.
  • Kilmore Street from Cranmer Square to Park Terrace.
